Old School Spotlight: Baby Doll

Baby Doll

In the long storied history of professional wrestling, many spandex clad gladiators have grabbed our attention and captured our imaginations. These colorful characters remain in the deepest recesses of our minds years after their glory days in the ring have passed. The most memorable grapplers from our years of wrestling fandom are often those that we encounter early on in our initial discovery of the mat game. This column will take a look at some of the most bizarre, flamboyant, charismatic, and downright terrifying pro wrestlers of all time.

The PWA Show: Some Like It Hot…..

Episode 41 of The PWA Show has arrived! Hear Chad & Keila recap last weekend’s WWE Hell in a Cell PPV event and the following night’s RAW. How did they feel about the shocking return of Alberto Del Rio? Which talents stand to benefit the most from the absence of John Cena and Randy Orton? Did Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker go too far in a PG Era? Which top WWE star has suffered another injury setback? What pro wrestling icon recently saw a popular tourist stop bearing his name be closed for good? Which popular independent tag team signed an exclusive contract with a national promotion? All these questions and more are answered this week. Chad also discusses his experience last weekend at the third annual Superstars of Wrestling Fanfest in Rome, GA hanging with WWE Hall of Famers Scott Hall, “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff, Ron Simmons, and other greats of the squared circle. Our roving reporter, “Halfpint”, was in Jackson, TN last weekend for USA Championship Wrestling’s All-Star Tribute to legendary Memphis wrestling announcer, Lance Russell. Chad talks about the main event of that card featuring Terry Funk -vs- Jerry “The King” Lawler. For one night, the clocks were turned back and time stood still. A hot crowd in west Tennessee was reminded of why they love pro wrestling and just who exactly is “The King”. There’s something old and something new and plenty of things just for you on this week’s edition of The PWA Show, YOUR pro wrestling authority.

The PWA Show: Old School Is Cool…..

Chad & Keila come to you with this week with the final episode of their 30s focusing heavily on the current state of the WWE. The duo discuss the recent NXT special and the future stars working on that brand. They also cover in great detail this past week’s RAW. John Cena turns in another solid performance defending the United States Title in front of a Chicago crowd that’s more worried about chanting something snarky than actually enjoying the show. Chad approves of the way Braun Strownman has been presented thus far while Keila gets a little upset at the Chi-town crowd for their chants toward Bray Wyatt. The continued misuse of WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Seth Rollins, is a topic yet again this week as he suffered another non-title loss on Monday. WWE’s search for their next big Latino star is also examined. Are they only looking to appeal to the large Hispanic population in response to the lowest TV ratings in almost 20 years? The lackluster build to what should be an important PPV in Hell In A Cell also leaves them scratching their proverbial heads. WWE has loaded up the go home edition of RAW next week so all hope is not quite lost just yet. The PWA Mailbag returns as listener questions are answered. Topics include the debacle that has become the Lana/Rusev/Summer Rae/Dolph Ziggler storyline with Lana announcing via Instagram that her and Rusev are officially engaged. Talk then turns to proper use of social media with Chad praising Kevin Owens for his use of Twitter to further his on screen persona rather than joining his modern counterparts and dancing on the grave of kayfabe. Which legend doesn’t get enough credit as one of the all-time greats? Apparently royalty doesn’t ensure immortality in the world of professional wrestling. Old school territories are also covered as Chad fields a question concerning which regional promotions were the most financially successful back in the day. The 29 year anniversary of the near fatal car crash that ended the career of Magnum TA is also discussed as it relates to a great article found at thepwashow.com this week. It’s a little bit of something old with a helping of something new this week on Episode 39 of The PWA Show, YOUR pro wrestling authority!

The PWA Show: Highway to Hell…..In A Cell

Episode 38 comes to you this week with Chad & Keila excited to see “The Beast” Brock Lesnar back on RAW. The duo examine all the highs and lows from this past Monday Night in Boston. They also discuss recent comments by former WWE World Heavyweight Champion, CM Punk, disparaging both the Susan G. Komen Foundation and professional wrestling as well. Chad also goes into detail about how the WWE has misused The Big Show for the better part of 15 years rendering him useless today. The Divas Revolution is again a hot topic as Keila has some advice for WWE Divas Champion, Charlotte. Chad once again voices his displeasure with John Cena who this time inadvertently cost him an opportunity to hang with “Nature Boy” Ric Flair. Stephanie McMahon’s ego is also discussed and how her on screen character always gets the better of every verbal exchange. The current state of TNA is also examined including a new TNA World Heavyweight Champion being crowned at last weekend’s Bound for Glory PPV. The aftermath of that title switch has been interesting to say the least and confusing at best as the future of the company is still up in the air. Our roving reporter, Halfpint, checks in this week with an all new edition of Halfpint’s Point as he covers the importance of a good ring announcer to the overall success of a wrestling event. Enjoy lots of good discussion this week on a variety of topics as well as some shade thrown but, as always, many laughs along the way on this installment of The PWA Show, YOUR pro wrestling authority!

The Mental Ward: Welcome to the Boys Club…..

I first discovered pro wrestling in the mid-1980s. “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes doing battle with “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton inside a steel cage is one of my earliest wrestling memories. However, when I saw “Nature Boy” Ric Flair and Sting go 60 minutes at the first Clash of the Champions, I was hooked for life. THAT was storytelling. THAT was drama. THAT was pro wrestling. In my youth Hulkamania ran wild. In my high school and college years, The Attitude Era redefined the industry. In my adult years, things just haven’t been the same. A spark is missing. The sport I loved has morphed into something almost unrecognizable at times. Yet, I still watch. I cling to hope that pro wrestling will one day again return to past glory. Webster defines insanity as doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result. Ladies and gentlemen, come on in. We’re all friends here. Welcome back to, “The Mental Ward.”

The PWA Show: Bellabrating and Contemplating…..

Episode 35 comes to you this week with a Bellabration in progress! Chad & Keila discuss Nikki Bella becoming the longest reigning WWE Divas Champion in history. The duo also look at the very lackluster go home edition of Monday Night Raw that was supposed to whet our appetites for this weekend’s Night of Champions Pay Per View. How did WWE do in making us want to watch their big event Sunday? Jeff Jarrett’s deal with TNA is also examined as it becomes clear why Double J recently again entered into a working agreement with the struggling brand that he helped establish over a decade ago. The focus quickly turns again to talk of the upcoming Night of Champions. The PWA Drinking Game returns as Chad & Keila both give their thoughts, analysis, and predictions for the big event. Who do they believe will walk out of Houston wearing gold? Who will Dean Ambrose & Roman Reigns recruit to help them battle the Wyatt Family? Will Nikki Bella’s diva dominance continue? All this and much more is contemplated during this festive edition of our show. So pour a glass of bubbly, put on your party hats, and let’s Bellabrate this week on The PWA Show, YOUR pro wrestling authority!

The PWA Show: Babies, Bellas, & Brock’s Bogus Beatdown…..

This week Chad and Keila return for Episode 24 after a week off with Chad adjusting to fatherhood and having a newborn daughter in his life. They have plenty to say about everything that’s making headlines in the pro wrestling world. The duo discuss the fallout from the recent WWE Money in the Bank PPV, highlights and lowlights from this past Monday’s RAW, rumors of two top WWE stars that are possibly leaving the company, a new ROH World Champion being crowned, Jeff Jarrett appearing on TNA Impact Wrestling and what that could mean for the future of Global Force Wrestling, as well as a few TNA talent departures. Keila also shares her weekly words of wisdom with some sage advice for the WWE’s Divas division while Chad takes a few moments to remember  the late great “Nature Boy” Buddy Landel to close out the show. This is a short, sweet, and fun filled edition of The PWA Show, YOUR pro wrestling authority!

The PWA Show: The Road to WrestleMania

In this week’s show Chad & Keila once again examine the world of pro wrestling. They have a lively discussion about this past Monday’s RAW and the affect it will have on WrestleMania 31. How do they feel about Jon Stewart’s involvement? Does a loss this past Monday night help Roman Reigns?  Why does WWE rely on the same lazy distraction finishes week after week? What’s the latest dirt on the WWE Divas? Halfpint also checks in with his “Halfpint’s Point” segment as he examines The Undertaker and his involvement in WrestleMania. Hear thoughts on all those topics plus: the futures of former world champions, Samoa Joe and Rey Mysterio; the merits of inter-gender matches in pro wrestling; an ROH 13th Anniversary PPV re-cap; and an exclusive interview with former NWA Television Champion and NWA Australian Heavyweight Champion, Jeremiah Plunkett, as he climbs aboard “The PWA Hotseat”. Chad also has some exciting news about next week’s episode! Don’t miss all this and more on this week’s edition of The PWA Show, YOUR pro wrestling authority.
