Glam Slam: NXT (4-8-15) & WWE Smackdown (4-9-15)

Itami

Hi guys! Welcome back to this week’s edition of The Glam Slam! NXT aired a pre-recorded show from several weeks back and Smackdown was, well…..Smackdown so let’s take a look!

NXT (Air Date: 4/8/15)

This episode of NXT was recorded at WrestleMania Axxess and featured a tournament to determine which superstar would be rewarded with a spot in the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania 31. Hideo Itami, Tyler Breeze, Finn Balor and Adrian Neville battled it out to see who would get that spot so let’s take a look back and see how it all came about!

Tournament Semi-Final No. 1 – Hideo Itami –vs- Adrian Neville. Winner Hideo Itami. He needed this win after his losses to Tyler Breeze over the past few months. Neville has accomplished everything he can in NXT so this made sense.

Tournament Semi-Final No.2 – Finn Balor –vs- Tyler Breeze. Winner Finn Balor. This was a short match, around 5 minutes, but they made it work considering the time they had to work with. Average match, nothing spectacular.

Tournament Final – Finn Balor –vs- Hideo Itami. Winner Hideo Itami. I expected this match to be great but it didn’t live up to the hype. Hopefully these two will have the opportunity to face off again in the future.

Overall this episode of NXT was a great way to showcase the great talent that NXT possesses. Of course the matches themselves were flawed but that is to be expected. People often forget that NXT is developmental! I think this episode of NXT would have been better suited for a behind the scenes documentary on WrestleMania or perhaps an NXT special. The video package showing Itami with his family and what this opportunity meant to him was great stuff!

Smackdown (Air Date: 4/9/15)

The show opened with Daniel Bryan cutting an in ring promo, but eventually he was interrupted by Sheamus, Wade Barrett, Dolph Ziggler and Roman Reigns. At first this started out peaceful everyone said what they wanted to say then of course the heels and faces started gunning for each other. These opening segments are very popular when it comes to WWE TV. Someone always kicks off the show in ring and then gets interrupted. This needs to stop! Of course this always leads up to a tag match being set up for later in the show (shoutout to Teddy Long). This is repetitive and boring. Get it together creative! Speaking of the tag team division if they really wanted to try something new, they could put Wade Barrett and Sheamus together as a tag team. It would be something different and they could balance out each others weaknesses. I am not saying it would be great but anything would be better than what they are currently doing with the tag division.

Tyson Kidd and Cesaro Defeated The New Day. Speaking of the tag division, the crowd is still chanting “New Day Sucks”, which I have to agree with. WWE is trying to work with that chant as part of the reason why they are turning heel. Just admit that New Day was a terrible mistake WWE. So much could have been done with these guys but instead they reduced them to this terrible Southern Baptist or whatever it is gimmick. I was hoping that creative planned to turn them into a faction almost like The Nation of Domination, but what was I thinking? That might have actually been good! They are starting to slowly turn them heel but I don’t see how this will work without a total disbandment and repackage for all three guys. We will see how this plays out in the next few weeks.

Neville Defeated Curtis Axel. Axel is still milking Axelmania but I don’t know how much longer he can get away with it. Although it’s amusing, it will grow stale……brother! This wasn’t a very long match but still a fun match to watch. I am looking forward to seeing what Neville can do on the main roster!

Natalya Defeated Alicia Fox. Cameron was special referee. This was a pretty basic match and not too bad although I was distracted by Cameron yelling “I am in charge” for no reason. Although she was a fair ref which was a little shocking?

Bray Wyatt Defeated Erick Rowan. I am not sure what they are doing with either of these guys. Sadly neither does WWE at this point. Wyatt gets all types of interesting vignettes and video packages for really no particular reason. Rowan also had a video package this week which was a little out of the ordinary considering he really has no prospects for a feud. Does WWE just not know what to do with these guys at this point? A feud between Bray Wyatt and Erick Rowan or Luke Harper after the stables disbandment would have made much more sense, but when has anything WWE done made any sense?

MizTV was basically a plug for The Marine 4. Summer Rae came out to remind Miz that he wasn’t the only star in the film. Damien Mizdow made his way out to the ring. Miz told him that everything could go back to the way it was before if he would just say he was sorry. Of course Mizdow would have no part of that and he knocked him out and went in for the kiss with Summer Rae. Mizdow embarrassed the Miz and got the girl! I am a Miz fan a lot of people don’t like him but I think he is a great heel and plays the role well. He is doing a great job of putting Mizdow over. The crowd loves him!

Daniel Bryan, Dolph Ziggler and Roman Reigns Defeated Sheamus, Big Show, and Bad News Barrett. This match has been done numerous times. The only difference this time around was the inclusion of Sheamus. As far as a six man tag it was pretty much what you would expect with these guys. It was nothing out of the ordinary, nothing spectacular.

This episode of Smackdown was lackluster to say the least, which usually happens after WrestleMania. Creative is scrambling for fresh new ideas, feuds, and storylines. However they cannot use this as an excuse for very much longer! I would like Smackdown to be more than a recap of RAW and the same tag matches week after week! Hopefully that will happen when Smackdown moves to the USA Network in 2016. That will do it for me this week! See you next week! As always, you can reach me on Twitter @GlamSlamSteph.
